HAITI Earthquake Recovery Update

Volunteer Recovery Teams are now being scheduled and will work on projects that have selected as priorities by the Methodist Church in Haiti. Family housing is one of the initial priorities. While earthquake-resistant housing will be the long-term goal, an immediate need is for transitional housing. Facilities for schools and health services are also priorities. Infrastructure challenges, such as transportation for people and materials, and housing for visitors has slowed the use of mission volunteers in post-earthquake Haiti, according to UMCOR staff.

Each volunteer team will be made up of 8 to 12 members with skills appropriate to particular projects. US teams will be supplied by UMVIM. Each team of volunteers are asked to provide from $3,000 to $5,000 per qualifying project, amounts that will be matched by funds from the UMCOR grant. Team contributions will go through The Advance, the designated mission-giving channel of the church. All priority sites are expected to be identified by mid-June.

Volunteer teams should plan to provide salaries and meals for Haitians working with them (recommendation of 2 Haitians per US citizen, including drivers, translators, cooks, etc).

Teams will be scheduled through the the office of the US/Haiti Coordinator, which will assure that necessary paper work covering insurance, finances, and travel is appropriately handled. Contact Susan J. Meister, US/Haiti Coordinator, in addition to Bill Gross, UMVIM, NC Coordinator to schedule an UMVIM team from North Carolina Conference.

The Haiti Volunteer Management Coordinator, Rev. Mike Willis, will maintain links to the church in Haiti and coordinate logistics and materials on the ground for incoming teams.
