UMVIM BASIC Team Leader Training

UMVIM, NC offers Team Leadership Training four times each year at the MERCI Center in Goldsboro, NC. Sponsored by UMVIM, there is no fee for the training event. Dates for 2008 are:

February 15 - 16, 2008
May 16 - 17, 2008
August 15 - 16, 2008
November 14 - 15, 2008

Attendees should plan to eat dinner before arrival on Friday evening. The class will share breakfast together on Saturday.

The event is being held in a retreat format. There are no fees for the classes or materials. Training is sponsored by UMVIM, NC Conference. Attendees may lodge at the MERCI Center for a fee of $20 per person, payable to MERCI. Bunks, cots and shower facilities are available. Attendees should bring a sleeping bag and/or bunk linens.

UMVIM Advanced Team Leader Training

UMVIM, NC is now offering Advanced Team Leader Training for team leaders who have completed UMVIM Basic Team Leader Training and are in need of renewal (if it has been four or more years since participation in Basic Team Leader Training).

The classes will include a review and sharing of ideas, followed by a specific area of concentration for the remainder of the session. For the year 2008, the areas of concentration are as follows:

Classes will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night and will conclude by noon on Saturday. There is no cost to this training, but it is required of team leaders in order to receive seed money offered through UMVIM, NC. Leaders must have taken an initial or refresher course within the four-year period prior to the trip.

Team Leaders are welcomed to attend one or all of the sessions. Please note that both the Basic and Advanced Team Leader Training sessions are offered simultaneously, so if there is someone who might interested in the Basic Training, attendees could carpool.

Schedule

The training sessions will begin Friday evening promptly at 7:00 and will conclude approximately 9:00 - 9:30. Class will resume after breakfast on Saturday (approximately 8:30) and will conclude around noon. The outline will follow the recently released revision to the Team Leader Handbook for UMVIM and each participant will receive a copy.

Making an area safe, sanitary, and secure by doing temporary repairs.

This program is designed to teach people what to do and what not to do as the first people allowed in a disaster area. Each team member has a specific job (leader, logistics person, base camp manager, etc.) and teams stay no more than 3 days at a time. All teams are self sufficient so that they are not an added burden to a suffering community. The class offers the opportunity to discuss and practice the early response procedures. Classes are offered at the MERCI Center on the above dates as well as upon request of a local church or District where there are 6 or more interested people.

Cost for Early Response Training is $30 which covers course materials, a
T-Shirt and badge. Lodging at the MERCI Center is available for $20 per night.

From Smithfield and points West:

Take US70 East to Highway 581. (There's a traffic signal with an Exxon station on the far left corner of the intersection) Turn right onto Highway 581South for and travel approximately 1 mile. Turn right onto Community Drive (just before the railroad tracks) and travel for approximately 1/2 mile. The Recovery Center is on the left.

From Goldsboro and points East:

Take US70 West to Highway 581. (There's a traffic signal with an Exxon station on the right) Turn left onto Highway 581South for and travel approximately 1 mile. NOTE: As of January 2003, in order to receive seed money from UMVIM NCC, the team leader will be required to attend the team leadership training course offered by UMVIM, NCC. Leaders must have taken an initial or refresher course within the four year period prior to the trip.
